Below is an article my e.Merging colleague, Leanna Harris, recently wrote. If you are a parent of a current fourth grader, this post will definitely speak to you! Believe it or not, now is the time to start thinking about middle school options. Here is a list of things that parents can start doing today in preparation for the middle school transition.
Here are 5 things that 4th grade parents can start doing now!
A friend who recently went through the DPS choice process for her 5th grade twins commented to me, “I sure hope the college process isn’t this stressful!”. While the transition from elementary to middle school is an exciting and meaningful milestone for young people, it can also feel overwhelming and be anxiety-ridden for parents who are trying to find the best school fit for their children.
In order to alleviate some of the stress often associated with this journey, consider things that you can start doing in the spring of your child’s 4th grade year to get a jump-start on the process.
1. Do your research.
We are fortunate in the Denver area to have so many options for middle schools, both public and private. Get online and start to read up on what’s out there. Think about your child’s strengths and passions and look for schools that appeal to those elements. Ask friends who’ve been through the process where they looked. But be sure to keep an open mind – what may not have worked for someone else might end up being a great fit for your child.
